Ekopesantren, an Islamic Local Wisdom-Based Model of Ecological Education Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals

This article examines how Al Ashriyyah Nurul Iman Islamic Boarding School in Bogor, a pioneer of the ekopesantren movement, builds an ecological education model grounded in local wisdom to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using a qualitative field design combining interviews, observation, and document analysis with informants from school leaders, teachers, students, staff, the eco-pesantren team, and the surrounding community, the study finds that the pesantren integrates Islamic teaching, Sundanese local wisdom, and sustainability principles into five pillars, namely an environment-based curriculum, environmentally managed campus, inclusive community, culture of sustainable living, and circular economy. Local values such as silih asah, silih asih, and silih asuh shape students into agents of ecological and social transformation, while circular economy practices convert waste into biogas, compost, and paving blocks, together supporting ten SDGs (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 17). The article argues that Islamic local wisdom offers a values-based foundation for religious institutions' contribution to sustainable development, positioning the ekopesantren model as a reference for other faith-based institutions, while noting that its single-site scope calls for caution in generalizing without further comparative research.
