Harmonizing Mataraman Cultural Heritage and Islamic Values for Sustainable Social and Economic Development

Economic progress is frequently reduced to numerical growth and physical infrastructure expansion, yet genuine development requires a multidimensional outlook that also embraces social, cultural, and spiritual dimensions, particularly when examined through an Islamic lens. This study aims to examine how Mataraman cultural practices, specifically the Bersih Desa and Nyadran ceremonies, are aligned with Islamic development principles and how this alignment contributes to social and economic advancement. This article investigates the acculturation of Mataraman cultural heritage with Islamic values, focusing on the Bersih Desa and Nyadran ceremonies practiced in East Java, Indonesia. Using an ethnographic research design, data were gathered through field observation and in-depth interviews with 24 community leaders, local officials, religious figures, and ritual participants across two Mataraman villages. The findings indicate that these ceremonies, originally shaped by Hindu belief systems, have gradually absorbed Islamic teachings while retaining their communal character, thereby strengthening collective welfare, ecological responsibility, and social harmony. The practices correspond closely with core Islamic principles concerning personal moral growth, shared human prosperity, and stewardship of the earth. The study concludes that when local traditions are synchronized with religious values, they generate tangible benefits for economic advancement, social cohesion, and environmental sustainability. These results affirm the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage and suggest that such traditions be further developed as cultural tourism assets capable of generating additional income for local communities. Future studies are encouraged to situate Mataraman wisdom within the broader analytical framework of maqasid al-shari'ah.
